Welcome to Hay River!

Situated on the southern banks of Great Slave Lake at the mouth of the Hay River in Canada's Northwest Territories, the town of Hay River is also known as the Hub of the North. Originally settled in the late 19th century by a First Nations chief, the area celebrates and continues to be influenced by local Dene First Nations culture and history. The Yamozha K'ue Society - Dene Cultural Institute located on the Hay River Dene Reserve features traditional clothing, authentic artifacts and a store selling original Dene artwork. Hay River's impressive natural surroundings make the town an ideal base for a variety of outdoor activities. Visitors can explore the trails at the Hay River Territorial Park, which features a beach that is ideal for a BBQ and viewing the Northern Lights after a day of boating and fishing on Great Slave Lake. Also try the Twin Falls Territorial Park, which includes an interpretive trail leading from the Hay River Canyon down to Alexandra and Louise Falls, the waterfalls that give the park its name.
